Easter Sunday

From one of my favorite old hymns:

"He lives! He lives!  Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me, along life's narrow way.
He lives!  He lives, salvation to impart.
You ask me how I know he lives -- he lives within my heart."

And from the gospel of John:

The Empty Tomb (John 20: 1-2)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene (John 20: 11-18)

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”
Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

John 13:12-16 (NIV)

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. (1Timothy 4, NIV)

Obviously we at Phalanx CrossFit believe that the physical training of the body is important.  We wouldn't be in this business if we didn't! Our bodies are amazing vessels - we possess strength that far surpasses our expectations, and we believe that if we do not exercise these bodies, then we fail to do honor to God who gave them to us.  Even as we strive for physical fitness, though, most of us never reach our true physical potential, which is one of the reasons that CrossFit is so fun!  The diverse nature of what we do here keeps us continuously making and meeting new goals.

That being said, the importance of spiritual training far outweighs that of the physical.

Here's another version of the same verses from 1 Timothy, from The Message: "Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please!  Workouts in the gymnasium are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever."

Pastor Steve Davis of Spout Springs Church spoke about this verse in his sermon on Sunday. His challenge to those of us in the congregation who spend time "working out" our bodies was to try and spend at least an equal amount of time "working out" our spiritual selves.  If spiritual training is more important than physical training, why don't we allot an adequate amount of time for it? How can we make time for both kinds of training in our lives?
