 2. When did you start doing CrossFit? 

Officially, June 2012

3. What got you into CrossFit? 

I had a few friends at work that liked to do CrossFit type workouts at lunchtime. They kept asking me to join, but I was always hesitant. I must admit I was a little scared and didn’t understand why they were lunging across the gym with 25 lb. plates over their heads. Eventually I caved and I joined them. I remember the first workout I did with them. Tabata air squats. I also remember how bad it hurt. The gym at work had limited equipment, but we always found a way to get in a WOD. I immediately fell in love with the intensity of the workouts and really found myself in a different place when it came to working out. I mean, after 35 years, it was the only thing that ever kept me interested in maintaining my fitness on a regular basis. After watching the 2012 CrossFit Games, I knew I wanted to join a box. I started looking around and it didn’t take me long to find Phalanx CrossFit.

4. What do you like about CrossFit? 

I love the feeling I get immediately after calling time. During the WOD, the only thought going through my mind is why the heck am I doing this? But as soon as I am done, I can smile and say that I did it. And that is all I need to make me want to do it again. I also love all the awesome people I have met. Everyone is there supporting one another. It’s crazy how you form bonds with people you barely know anything about. You just know that you are in it together. When I am having a bad day, all I have to do is walk into the box and my whole mood changes. Familiar faces, welcoming smiles…it’s the only hour of my day where I can forget about everything and leave my worries behind.

5. What is your favorite workout and why?

I don’t really have a specific favorite. Anything with cleans, pistols, box jumps, clean and jerks or deadlifts. I love EMOM (every minute on the minute) WODs with heavy weight because it gives you a chance to focus on not being fast, but perfecting your lift with enough recovery time in between to do it again. I’m a fan of chipper WODs too. I like knowing that once I am done with one set of moves I can move to the next and not have to go back. Especially Filthy Fifty :) I never want to go back and repeat 50 of anything. DT, Grace, Isabel…all favorites because of the lifts. I like Helen because I can finally swing a 1.5 pood kettlebell and last, but not least, Murph. I like doing Murph because everyone is in it together. It sucks, it hurts and it takes everything you’ve got to finish. I just try and think about how we are honoring the fallen and push on.

6. What is your least favorite workout and why? 

A year ago I would have said Karen. But I don’t even dislike her anymore. I now realize if I don’t get better at wallballs they will always stink. Hands down, Fran is my nemesis. Every time I do Fran it changes me a little. Pretty sure I have shed a tear or two more than once after that workout. One day I am going to Rx Fran. Not today, not tomorrow…but one day. Dang you, thrusters!

7. What else should we know about you? 

I have a wonderful husband named Mark who I am very much in love with. He is my best friend and sweetheart and I am so happy we have one another. Together we have 3 beautiful children which we couldn’t be more proud of.

8. How has CrossFit changed your daily life? 

I feel good! (Well, not completely true…I’m sore a lot of days) But honestly, I do feel better. It isn’t a struggle to get up the stairs and I can compete with my kids and not have to secretly worry they can beat me. I want to be someone they can look up to. There isn’t a better feeling than having your child ask how much weight was on your bar or ask to see your muscles ;-)

9. What personal changes have you noticed since starting CrossFit? 

I think CrossFit has helped me be more positive. In the past I know I was much more negative. I struggle with it all the time, but I do think I am getting better. Maybe it’s because I am getting older and wiser? I won’t debate it, I’ll take it. I like the person I am becoming. Oh, and my jeans don’t fit. None of them. No matter the size, shape, style or brand. There is a million dollar empire out there waiting for the right entrepreneur to step in. Jeans for chicks who CrossFit :)

10. Anything else we need to know about you? 

Someone that I love dearly is battling cancer. I struggle with it everyday. Just remember that everyone has something they are dealing with. You never know why someone is grumpy or irritable. Just try and make someone’s day, everyday. Be kind, play hard, and love deeply.
